Mezzanine System Engineering FAQ

Answers to frequent technical and compliance queries from warehouse procurement managers.

What is the difference between structural steel and rack-supported mezzanines?

Structural steel mezzanines use dedicated columns and heavy universal steel beams, leaving large open clear spans on the ground floor. This makes them ideal for packing areas, machinery, or office space below. Rack-supported mezzanines use standard pallet racking or shelving frames to support the upper walkway floor, which delivers higher SKU density at a significantly reduced capital cost per square metre.

What load capacity can an ILS mezzanine floor carry?

Platforms are custom-engineered for uniform distributed loads (UDL) ranging from 300 kg/m² for manual picking and office applications, up to 1,500+ kg/m² for pallet staging, tooling equipment, and automated conveyors. Every design includes certified load signs and engineering calculations.

How does the mezzanine comply with Civil Defence fire codes?

Our designs account for egress widths, travel distances, and integration with wet-pipe fire sprinkler networks. We provide open-grid steel grating options that permit water penetration from overhead ceiling sprinklers, and can coordinate fire-rated boarding where isolated occupancy zones are required.

Can existing mezzanine floors be modified or relocated?

Yes. Because ILS systems are engineered with precision bolted connections rather than irreversible on-site welding, they can be expanded with additional bays, reconfigured, or dismantled and re-erected at a new warehouse location.
